Author Cassie Jewell is a dually licensed professional counselor, licensed substance abuse treatment practitioner, and Virginia board-approved clinical supervisor with more than 15 years of experience helping individuals recover from trauma, addiction, grief, and mental illness. Throughout her career, she’s worked with people navigating life’s most difficult moments—until, six days after losing the career she believed she would have for the rest of her life, she experienced a life-altering ischemic stroke at age 42.
My Stro-Called Life and THE SHADOW LIFE grew from that experience. Drawing on both her clinical background and her own recovery, Jewell writes with honesty, dark humor, and compassion about the realities of neurological injury, disability, addiction, depression, and rebuilding a life after profound loss. Rather than offering easy inspiration, she explores the often-overlooked emotional and psychological challenges of stroke recovery with candor and self-deprecating wit.
Jewell is the founder of MindRemakeProject.org, a mental health website dedicated to evidence-based psychological resources, and she administers an online community of more than 8,000 counselors and social workers.
She lives in West Virginia with her partner, Sefe, and their dogs, where she continues to write, practice counseling, and advocate for honest conversations about mental health, addiction, and recovery.
